Foreclosure Prevention Counseling

If you are at risk of being late or missing a mortgage payment, have fallen behind with your mortgage payments or have received legal paperwork threatening foreclosure, our trained counselors can discuss your options with you. Our counselors will assess your financial situation and explore possible solutions with you. Our goal is to help you achieve your goals as it relates to your home and financial situation. However, we do not give any legal advice and if you have legal question you should contact an attorney.


First-Time Home Buying

Our workshop gives first-time homebuyers a step-by-step guide to buying a home. Topics include home selection criteria, maintenance, credit reports and scores, home inspections, financing options, and closing considerations. Participants will receive a workbook and a certificate upon completion.



Bankruptcy Counseling & Education Services:

Pre-Filing Bankruptcy Counseling

Our certified counselors will work with you to create a personal financial assessment.  We will analyze your income, expenses, assets, and liabilities and provide you with a true and accurate picture of your financial situation. 

After the assessment, we will make you aware of the various options available to you and upon completion of the bankruptcy counseling session, you will be issued a certificate of participation.  This certificate allows you to proceed with the bankruptcy process.

Pre-Discharge Bankruptcy Education

Our Bankruptcy Education Program is available to you by mail, telephone, in-person, and soon and on-line program.  Our educators will interact with you and other participants to ensure that everyone benefits from the program.  The Executive Office of the U.S. Trustees has approved our Bankruptcy Education Program.  It is designed to cover a variety of financial and budgeting topics including goal setting, calculating net worth, creating a budget, building a savings plan, understanding your credit, and how to establish or re-establish your credit.  Upon completion of the program, you will receive a certificate allowing you to proceed with the bankruptcy discharge process.

Certificates will be issued within the guidelines Executive Office of US Trustee


*Counseling and Educational programs are provided without regard to the client's ability to pay. Fees may be waived if:

  1. the individual is filing bankruptcy pro se
  2. the attorney is doing the individuals bankruptcy pro bono
  3. the individual is incarcerated
  4. the individual is receiving public assistance
  5. if the individual doesn't have any income or can prove inability to pay
  6. any other hardship with executive director approval

Regarding Bankruptcy Counseling and Bankruptcy Instruction:

  • All of our credit counselors and educators are certified by the National Foundation for Credit Counseling.
  • The agency does not pay or receive any fees or other consideration for the referral of debtor student or clients to or by Family Service Association of Sheboygan.

* In all cases, documentation MUST be provided verifying the criteria in order for the fee to be waived.
